Recycling Program
Recycling dumpsters are available at the Village Maintenance Yard located at 11295 Waterville Street. This recycling center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for your convenience. This is a newly constructed, well-lit area and can be used for cardboard, newspaper, and plastic/glass/aluminum containers. The dumpsters are labeled for the following acceptable items:
Cardboard should be clean and free of any packing material (Styrofoam, plastic, etc.) and flattened.
Newspaper, magazines, sale fliers, office paper, junk mailings and school papers. Please do not place plastic bags into the dumpsters.
Containers include steel or aluminum cans, any color glass bottles or jars, and plastic containers with the #1 or #2 recycle symbol on the bottom of the container. Please rinse containers before depositing them. Please do not place plastic bags into the dumpsters.
The Village provides blue bins for residents to use when recycling and encourages the use of the bins for the transportation of recycling items to the recycling dumpster areas. Any items not listed above will be collected on Mondays with your normal refuse collection.
Cell phones and rechargeable batteries can be recycled at the Village Offices. For information, please call 419-877-5383.
Yard Waste/Grass Clippings. We are currently working with area communities and Lucas County Solid Waste Management District to establish an area composting facility. Until this facility becomes available, here are tips to help keep yard waste out of area landfills.
- Recycle your grass clippings and tree leaves by using a mulching lawn mower. Turn your existing mower into a mulcher by purchasing a mulching kit available from your local power equipment dealer or retailer. If you are considering a new lawn mower, this option is common on most new mowers for little to no additional cost. It eliminates the need for raking and bagging grass and leaves, returns vital nutrients to the turf to build a better lawn, and keeps weeds to a minimum. The lawn/turf fertilizing industry has several lawn maintenance fertilizers that work with mulching principles for maintaining healthy lawns.
- Compost your grass clippings, leaves and vegetative debris in a backyard composting bin (be sure to check local homeowner association rules and regs to be sure that a compost bin is allowed in your neighborhood). Tips can be found on the web at www.nrcs.usda.gov/feature/backyard/.
- We encourage the practice of green/yard waste recycling. The Lucas County Solid Waste Management District provides a free drop off site for green/yard waste. For hours of operation, contact Clean Wood Recycling, Inc., at 6505 W. Bancroft Street, 419-843-9663. The Village of Whitehouse currently spends approximately $12,000 per year in landfill charges disposing of grass clippings. Any effort made by our residents to reduce and recycle would greatly reduce these expenses.
Items not accepted for recycling are:
- Aluminum storm doors and downspouts
- Plate glass, such as windows or mirrors
- Plastics without the number 1 or 2 stamped on the bottom
- Food cans which contain food residue
